Galerie Sophie: An art gallery with flexible working spaces, available to individuals working within a culturally engaged field.
Galerie Sophie, a former printing press turned art gallery/flexible working space, is about as close to the bustling heart of The Hague without being an actual cafe. At a couple minutes from de Grote Markt area, the square full of cafes and restaurants, Galerie Sophie sits behind an unassaming facade, one that belies the large space behind it.
Originally just a gallery with the express intent of providing a space for young, up-and-coming artists, the new owners of Galerie Sophie added a flexible working space to their repertoire. They do maintain the stipulation that tenants work in the creative industry, though they themselves stress that this can be taken in a broad sense. It’s important to the owners that tenants are culturally engaged in a way.
The fourteen flexible working spaces that are available are divided (unevenly) across a ground floor and a first floor, the latter also providing access to a quaint roof terrace. The whole building has a pleasant, living room type atmosphere to it, and the ground floor is often bathed in sunlight due to the very large skylights – a remnant of the buildings’ tenure as printing studio.
